Wildlife

Tropical North Queensland is one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Keep an eye out for endangered southern cassowaries near Aloomba, tree kangaroos in the highlands, platypus at dawn in Tablelands streams, and an incredible array of tropical birds. Estuarine crocodiles inhabit local waterways — always observe warning signs and swim only in designated areas.

Stinger Season

Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in coastal waters from November to May. Beaches like Palm Cove and Trinity Beach have stinger nets during this period. When on reef trips, wear a stinger suit — most tour operators provide them. Freshwater swimming holes like Babinda Boulders and Crystal Cascades are stinger-free year-round.
